Talent Platform

Talent Platform is an online platform showcasing emerging creative talents supported by the Talent Development grant of Creative Industries Fund NL. It shows what artistic and professional growth entails and serves as a fount of information for other creatives and commissioners.

We created a fully responsive visual identity, based on one simple animation principle. We aimed to capture the spirit of a new generation of designers: strong-minded, energetic, experimental and dynamic. A lively visual identity about growth and stretching boundaries.

Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie

In 2012 the former Architecture Fund and part of the Fonds BKVB fused into one new fund; the Creative Industries Fund NL; the Dutch cultural fund for architecture, design and digital culture.
For the visual identity, a pitch was launched. We were one of the 4 agencies invited and finally, our proposal was selected.

“A fund on itself is nothing without the makers and designers that receive funding. They are the ones that give it shape”. From this statement, the idea of a black line emerged: nothing on itself, but with the potential to become anything.

With the iconic capital S (or C) as a status quo, we designed transformations within. Giving the logo a feeling of incentive, energy, and diversity. Resulting in a wide range of variations of the logo, that can be used on an individual level, too. For example; each of the funds’ employees has its unique logo on its stationery.

Atelier Néerlandais

Atelier Néerlandais (part of the Dutch Embassy in Paris) is a platform and incubator for Dutch design, art, and literature.
Based in the heart of Paris.
Cultural entrepreneurs use the spaces in the Atelier Néerlandais for meetings, presentations, fashion shows, debates, etc.
Atelier Néerlandais is a place where Dutch and French culture and economy meet.

For this visual identity, we created imaginary zero-gravity spaces. Spaces with endless possibilities. Where words and letters can float around unconstrained, gently interacting with each other. Finding overlaps in Dutch and French words enabled us to design typography that could communicate on a bilingual level. And at the same time celebrating the similarities and the differences between the two cultures.

Mondriaan to Dutch Design

In 2017 we celebrated 100 years De Stijl. A Dutch art movement, with Piet Mondriaan being its most famous representative. De Stijl had a big influence on art and design. It paved the way for Dutch Design as we know it today.

Mondrian to Dutch Design is an initiative of NBTC Holland Marketing in collaboration with Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Museum de Lakenhal among other museums.

“The style is in our cultural DNA”. Based on this statement we designed a constructed typeface, where we replaced parts of a letter by shapes and colors where De Stijl is known for. At the same time, these shapes became a dynamic, colorful form language fitting the festive character of a celebration year.

The Vincent Award

The Vincent Award is one of the world’s leading contemporary art prizes. It is awarded to a mid-career artist who lives and/or works in Europe and whose work is regarded as influential on international developments in contemporary art.
Since 2014 the award ceremony for the biennial prize has been held at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.

In 2014 we designed a new visual identity based on existing elements; a logo and the European flag of Rem Koolhaas.
By changing the color scheme of the flag and animating the stripes, we transformed it into a more lively visual identity.
One fitting the festive character of an award show.

In No Particular Order

Each year the Creative Industries Fund presents the selected talents from the talent development program during the Dutch Design Week. In 2017 the exhibition, curated by Jules van den Langenberg, took place in the Van Abbemuseum.

One could state that selecting young talent is like trying to make a future prediction. If this is the new generation of designers, what will be the future of design?

For this occasion, we created a ‘prediction generator’. A generative system that makes predictions based on words from a database in which the work of the talents is analyzed.
Resulting in an infinite amount of future scenarios, which is the basis for this year’s campaign.

PBL@IABR2016

During the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2016 (IABR), PBL (Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency) presented an installation about the past, the present and the future of urban and spatial planning. How can one plan for the future, based on what you know from the past and the present?

The installation displays real data from the past and present to show how our perspective on the future is often distorted by the ‘now’.

We created a micro cosmos with particles that float throughout the 30-meter long installation, in a continuous loop. The seemingly random particles are all part of infographics that take shape at one moment in time, on a specific location in the installation.

100 years Mondrian & De Stijl

In the context of the celebration year ‘Mondrian to Dutch Design’, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag celebrated ‘100 years of Mondrian & De Stijl’. A year with several exhibitions and events based on this theme. With over 300 Mondrian’s in the collection, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag became the ‘House of Mondrian’ in 2017.

For this occasion, we designed a hybrid version of both the museum’s identity and the identity of the theme year. This results in an identity that represents both, but at the same functions as an identity on its own.

Frietje Precies

We were asked by the campaign- and design agency Ultra Ultra to create a visual identity for Frietje Precies. Frietje Precies (loosely translated ‘Precision Fries’), is a portion of high-tech and soil-friendly french fries. It was launched during the Dutch Design Week 2019.

Area graphs and soil layers. We designed a visual language based on their similarities, in which both nature and data are represented.
The colored strokes can be used to inform, illustrate or decorate. For example in animations, infographics, on a bag of fries, a food truck, etc.

Upstream

Upstream is A collaboration between the Performing Arts Fund NL, Creative Industries Fund and Sena Music for the career development of pop- and urban musicians. Upstream also supports new artistic formats and collaborations between artists and designers. Studio van Onna created the dynamic visual identity for this great new initiative.

For this identity, we developed a visual system that is based on an audio responsive variable font. Musical values, such as volume and pitch level, are translated to the weight and width of a letter. By animating these values, they symbolize the dynamics of music. Typographic music. At the same time, they communicate the feeling of (career) development and (musical) growth.
